Pope Paul III (painting by Venetian artist, Titian) |
1) What did this mean for artists working in Europe?
2) Was this effect felt differently from one area of the continent to another?
The Counter-Reformation was the Catholic church's big "push back" to the Protestant Reformation. How dare they launch a campaign against our great empire!?
The Council of Trent (1545-1563)
It is considered to be one of the Church's most important councils. It convened in Trent (then capital of the Prince-Bishopric of Trent, in the Holy Roman Empire, now in modern Italy).
The council issued condemnations on what it defined as Protestant heresies and defined Church teachings in the areas of Scripture and Tradition, Original Sin, Justification, Sacraments, the Eucharist in Holy Mass and the veneration of saints. It issued numerous reform decrees.[3] By specifying Catholic doctrine on salvation, the sacraments, and the Biblical canon, the Council was answering Protestant disputes.
